A historic tavern in the Centro district of Madrid and among Ernest Hemingway's favourites in the Spanish capital, the Venencia is entirely dedicated to the glory of sherry, this wine mutated from aguardiente brandy from the city of Cadiz, in the extreme south of the country, on the Andalusian seafront.
Enter La Venencia and travel back in time in an authentic bodega. Surrounded by old barrels and traditional woodwork, start your oenological experience with dry sherry, called Fino, before moving onto the heavier wines, such as the olorosos – to be enjoyed in moderation.
For sweeter wines, try Pedro Ximenez or Moscatel sherries. To accompany these nectars, the establishment offers a concise but oh so effective menu of tempting tapas like serrano jamón, marinated olives in garlic and petits fours in bleu cheese.
