The Rockefeller Center

The Rockefeller Center

A dazzling shopping complex of 19 Art Deco and modern buildings, built between 1930 and 1939, the Rockefeller Center was declared a historical monument in 1987.

Designed and built by the Rockefeller family, the complex covers nine hectares in Midtown, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and from 47th to 51tst streets. Besides being home to the major New York television studios as well as the print media, including Time-Life and McGraw-Hill, the centre offers many shops and theatres for visitors, including the famous Radio City Music Hall. Due to its numerous attractions that change depending on the season, Rockefeller Center is a tourist destination in itself. In winter, attractions include the massive ice rink and the world's most famous Christmas tree, which has been erected on the first Tuesday in December every year since 1936. More than 100 original artworks adorn the buildings. Have a look at the sculptures, friezes, and gilded statues outside but also at the exhibits inside, such as the famous mural American Progress by Catalan artist José Maria Sert.
