MUDE, a mandatory stop for design lovers

MUDE, a mandatory stop for design lovers

The museum offers a historical and comprehensive vision of design from the 1940s until today.

The museum first opened in 1999 in the Centro Cultural de Belém, but in 2009 it was definitively installed in its present, more modern surroundings under the name of ‘MUDE' (an acronym that also means ‘change' in Portuguese). The museum houses the collection of the businessman Francisco Capelo, which consists of over 2 500 pieces of furniture, articles of clothing, and utility objects by the greatest names in American, European, and Asian design, all covering a wide range of contemporary currents, from pop to postmodernism. Philippe Starck, Poul Henningsen, Masanori Umeda, Henning Koppel, and Tom Dixon are well represented. You can also see (but not touch!) iconic garments by the world's top fashion designers even the dress worn by actress Renée Zellweger at the 2001 Oscars!
