La Colombe is a restaurant up to its neck in awards, so remember to book well in advance. Of course, the main reason to make sure you plan ahead lies in the outstanding cuisine of James Gaag. Another reason to come: the restaurant has the feel of a private balcony overlooking the lush Constantia Valley of Hout Bay. Resembling a contemporary lodge dressed in white and grey, La Colombe is exceptionally beautiful.
The chef creates pure gold on the plate, often full of sweet surprises. The fish amuse-bouche is presented in a pretty tin of tuna. When you open it you'll see the tantalising tuna preparation with Asian influences that will delight your palate.
Then on to some tuna blind tasting, a marlin tataki, the catch of the day cooked in a Malaysian style or shrimp with strained yoghurt. Herbs come directly from the establishment's small vegetable garden and several vegetarian menus are also available. And what about the service? It's as perfect as the food and as lovely as the view.
