To those who claim that vegetarianism is a recent mode and that a vegetarian meal means eating bland food, bring them to Hiltl. Even the fiercest carnivores fall under the charm of the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Europe, opened in 1898.
In a contemporary decor with large picture windows, two choices are available: the menu or the huge buffet. If you order from the menu, try the famous tartar, which, though meatless, surprisingly approximates the taste of a true steak tartar. The buffet is fabulous, too.
The colour and freshness of the products, the fast and professional service, and the reinterpretations of classic Italian, Indian, Chinese, and Swiss dishes including a fabulous rösti, the speciality potato pancake are all delicious.
