Fiestas de Palmares: Costa Rica in all its diversity

Roughly 30 kilometres north of the capital, the small town of Palmares is a theatre for almost two weeks of popular shows bringing together tens of thousands of participants.

Palmares, despite its relatively small size, is the home to Costa Rica's largest festival. These fiestas early in the year are not to be missed—2017 will mark a turning point in the spirit of the events as they become more family-oriented, more athletic, and more gourmet, with a focus on Costa Rican gastronomy. The shows highlight the country's culture and pastimes: bullfighting Costa Rican style (without killing the bull), carnivals, soccer games, mountain bike races, mariachi concerts and tope—parades of Costa Rican cowboys on their most beautiful horses. The fiestas open with a procession of lanterns and end two weeks later with fireworks.
