The Mucha Museum: the Mecca of Art Nouveau

The Mucha Museum: the Mecca of Art Nouveau

In the historic city centre, the Kaunic Palace is home to the Mucha Museum, the first in the world dedicated to the work of Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha.

Dedicated to the work of Alphonse Mucha, the museum in his name is a paradise for lovers of the Art Nouveau style. Renowned for the complexity of his theatre posters, Mucha created postcards, ads, and illustrations.

After moving to Paris in 1886, the artist rose to international fame while working with actress Sarah Bernhardt. The museum houses a superb collection of sketches, paintings, photographs, and statues by this great Czech painter, who was also an interior designer and decorator.

Besides the monumental series of 20 paintings dedicated to the history of the Slavic people, the Slav Epic, now housed in the hall of the Veletržní Palace, Mucha decorated Prague's National Theatre and the Municipal House, thanks to the intervention of American philanthropist Charles Richard Crane.
