During the five-day festival celebrating the skills of Polynesian tattoo artists, you can get a tattoo and discover the wealth of styles of these artists whose talent is part of Polynesian cultural and social tradition: formerly, these skin-deep designs showed the rank of men and women in the community, or the value of the warriors. The Marquesas Islands are today still a great source of inspiration, with geometric shapes and stylized representations, sometimes covering the whole body of elders. So it's no coincidence that the word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word ‘tatau', describing the way to score the epidermis.
