You could not have imagined being able to bathe on a tropical beach or surf such beautiful waves. That is the magic of Hong Kong. At the end of a bus route or round the corner of a hiking trail, beaches of unexpected beauty appear. With walking shoes on your feet, and your swimsuit and sun cream in your back pack, set off to explore this natural tropical setting on the fringes of the city.
Hiking and surfing in Mui Wo
Make your way to Lantau, Hong Kong's largest island. Report to landing stage number five in the Central business district for the departure of the ferry. After a half-hour crossing, you arrive at the village of Mui Wo. A yellow signboard marks the starting point of your first two-hour waymarked hike. The trek – uphill – is challenging but rewarding: after thirty minutes walking, you will open your eyes in amazement when you see the superb Pui O beach appearing below you. With your goal in sight, everything becomes easier. The stepped path descends directly towards this dream come true. Be careful where you put your hands: humongous spiders sometimes hide in the thick vegetation.
At the end of your route, the asphalt road leads to a very welcome bay. With bare feet, you celebrate by trampling the fine sand of Pui O. A few metres away, a stand has surfboards for rent to surf addicts. With your board under your arm, you enter the 25°C water with the firm intention of mastering the waves of the China Sea.
Bathing and bodyboarding in Cheung Sha
There is another lovely surprise awaiting you in Cheung Sha, in the south of Lantau. A still jealously guarded secret, this beach and the beach of Pui O boast three kilometres of white sand against a backdrop of lush green mountains. The very extensive public transport network in this part of Hong Kong makes it easy for you to reach this isolated site. On your arrival, you find yourself in a different world. You discover a tropical setting with the appearance of a nature park. Despite their untouched appearance, these long public beaches are supervised by master swimmers and protected by shark nets. You can bathe in complete safety in delightful waters.
Fancy a more challenging activity? Why not opt for a thrilling body boarding session? Reinvigorated by the foaming spume, lay out your beach towel in the shade of the large trees and contemplate the immensity of the sea. Out at sea, the ferries pass by on their way to Macao. Hunger drives you back to Mui Wo, where you find The Stoep at High Tide, the most famous restaurant on the island. Facing the River Silver, a plate of dim sum accompanied by tea provides a delicious end to your tropical adventure.

Searching for Tai Long Wan
Lovers of hidden paradises know that access to the most beautiful sites has to be earned. You need to be highly motivated to get to Tai Long Wan. Set off early in the morning to enjoy the most beautiful unspoiled beach in Hong Kong's New Territories. A long journey awaits you to this remote corner of the world on the southern coast of Sai Kung peninsula. As soon as you reach the famous MacLehose Trail, your hike begins.
Get ready for a one-and-a-half-hour descent in the stifling heat of the hills. The views of the blue sea will lift your spirits. Do not forget to drink plenty of liquids to help you cope with the heat better. After crossing paths with harmless buffaloes and geckos, you arrive at the first beach, entitled Ham Tin, with its exceptional view of verdant mountains. The adventure continues along a tree-lined path.
Around the bend of a hill, the setting lights up. Turquoise water laps against the beach of your dreams, fringed with white sand. At the sight of Tai Long Wan, “big wave bay”, your tiredness vanishes straightaway. You slip on your swimsuit and run to join several surfers on the lookout for waves. Saddened by the thought of having to leave to catch the last minibus, you toy with the idea of sleeping under the stars, so you can continue the fun. A small local restaurant overlooking the beach, Hoi Fung Store, with its garlic grilled vegetables, makes it even more tempting…
