The Argentine capital has 25 bookshops per 100,000 inhabitants, some of which are among the most beautiful in the world. The origin of this particular link to books? The waves of immigration, since the end of the 19th century, that have made Buenos Aires a cultural and artistic crossroad.
One bookstore in particular should attract your attention: inaugurated in 1919, the neo-classical theatre El Ateneo Grand Splendid has been transformed into a bookshop with its decor still intact, giving the establishment a unique charm. The fresco of its large dome, painted almost a century ago by the famous Nazareno Orlandi, overlooks budding readers and lovers of literature alike, meandering among works throughout, even on the balconies!
