Café Mundo: a cosmopolitan table
This century-old house in the Barrio Otoya has been turned into a cosy bar-restaurant where the customers are as international as the cuisine.
Well hidden behind tall bamboo and a grey fence, Café Mundo is a must in the Costa Rican capital, especially for expatriates, who appreciate its classic colonial architecture, enhanced with a red facade, green shutters, and white valances. The colours are also bold inside with frescoes and tapestries on the walls, giving the place a certain class and a slightly old-fashioned feel.
While the dishes are very much in tune with the times, and even the open sea, they travel around the world: bruschetta, vegetable tempura, onion rings, and crab spring rolls, for starters; Caesar and Nicoise salads, pizza, pasta, empanadas, and Argentinian grill for the mains; pecan pie, tiramisu, flan with caramel, or chocolate mousse for dessert. No need for a passport to delight the taste buds!
