Basilica di Santo Spirito: where business joins pleasure

Don't be fooled by the surprising simplicity of its facade: this is a great spot to soak up the festive spirit of this very popular area, especially at night.

Built on the beautifully wooded eponymous square, the Basilica of the Holy Spirit was designed by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi, the theorist of mathematical perspective, who never got a chance to finish it. After his death in 1446, ten years after the start of work, his disciple and biographer Antonio Manetti took over-and it was he who decided to leave the facade bare.

The perfect unity of the interior is based on the Latin cross, with three naves; the altar and canopy were executed in the 17th century by the goldsmith Giovanni Battista Caccini in polychrome marbles, bronze, and stone. Take a tour of Santo Spirito's 36 chapels, which hold many masterworks, including The Virgin and Child by Filippino Lippi. The sacristy contains an early work by Michelangelo, a touching Christ carved in wood. Upon leaving, linger in one of the cafés on the piazza or have a delicious, all-natural gelato at the Gelateria della Passera.
