Destination Guide: Seattle

Fresh seafood, rock legends and a glistening waterfront
The Seattle sounds of Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix and Pearl Jam fill the air from downtown museums and music shops. Dine on steaming bowls of chowder at pier-side restaurants while the sun drops beneath the lavender waves of Puget Sound.

Food and Drink

Seafood and fruit, fresh from Seattle's backyard. The city's Waterfront serves up broiled salmon and king crab dinners overlooking Puget Sound. Try one of Seattle's award-winning, home-brewed beers or indulge in the city's passion for rich, locally roasted coffee. The stalls at Pike Place Market are piled high with steamed clams, sweet cherries and peaches.

Sightseeing and relaxation

See Seattle glisten with glass and steel skyscrapers and crystalline Puget Sound. Jimi Hendrix's screaming guitar riffs and Kurt Cobain's soul-stirring refrains enthral visitors at Frank Gehry's Experience Music Project. Let the Space Needle's lift whisk you 158 meters above ground for views of the Waterfront and, to the east, the snow-capped cone of Mount Rainier.

Shopping

Pack your bags with antique jewellery, modern art and wine. Pioneer Square, Seattle's historic district, draws visitors with contemporary art galleries and one-off dress shops. In Fremont seek out funky vintage blouses and leather belts. Pike Place Market sells bottles of wine produced from the nearby Columbia River Gorge.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Tap your feet to live indie-rock, jazz or blues. Visit Pioneer Square after hours for entertainment from live rock music to electric dance club tunes. The Belltown district draws the smart crowd with upscale late-night clubs. Sample local beers on an evening tasting session at Seattle's favourite microbreweries, Elysian and Pyramid Alehouse.
