Destination Guide: Tokyo

Sci-fi skyscrapers, neon-lit streets and serene Zen temples
Explore Odaiba's futuristic shopping streets and the ancient Meiji shrine, sheltered by a forest. Dip into a traditional mineral bath and admire the dazzling sets of traditional Kabuki plays.

Food and Drink

Start with sushi or take traditional tea. Breakfast on fresh sushi outside Tsukiji fish market. Locals love the izakayas(informal bar-restaurants) for a made-to-share dish of sashimi and yakitori. Taste tradition on the rush mats of Asakusa's tiny restaurants, or at an ages-old Ginza tea ceremony.

Sightseeing and relaxation

Find serenity in temples or plunge into hot springs. Take a boat to historic Asakusa's market for a fortune-telling in incensed-filled Sensoji Temple. Watch raucous tuna auctions at Tsukiji fish market. Follow the lantern-lined pathway to tiny Toshogu Shrine in Ueno Park, or take a relaxing soak in a hot spring sento(public bath).

Shopping

Browse boutique fashion or traditional markets. Chic boutiques dot Ginza, and rainbow-haired punks love the up-to-the-minute street fashions on pedestrianised Takeshita Dori. Browse Nakamise's stalls in Sensoji Temple's grounds for traditional souvenirs, or buy razor-sharp kitchen knives along busy Kappashi Dori.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Take in traditional culture or neon-lit pleasures. Sample tradition with a colourful Kabuki performance at Kabukiza Theatre. Neon-lit Shinju-ku's bars and clubs make for perfect people-watching, but for plush cocktail bars head to Roppongi Hills. Join locals to cheer on Sumo wrestling, or Japan's latest craze, baseball.
