Destination Guide: Douala

African beats and Cameroonian laughter on the streets
The port city of Douala is Cameroon’s biggest and busiest, with a hot, tropical temperament that cools only briefly when the monsoon rains fall. It may not be the official capital but does still remain the hub for Cameroonian business and pleasure.

Food and Drink

Grilled fish at street stalls or European fine dining. Dine in upscale French and Italian restaurants with white-linen tablecloths in lively Akwa or Douala’s Bonapriso business district. At street stalls all over the city Douala’s women char-grill freshly caught fish cooked in delicious peanut sauce – wander along Ave Ahmadou Ahidjo for the best selection.

Sightseeing and relaxation

Urban vibe and day trips into Africa’s hot heart. A brightly lit studio, innovative L'espace Doual'art eschews traditional African crafts for contemporary works. Hire a driver or take a minibus two hours’ south of Douala to Kribi for its golden sand and shallow seas. From the chilled-out port of Limbe, an hour north, glimpse West Africa’s tallest, Mount Cameroon.

Shopping

Market shopping for African arts and crafts. Shop for traditional craftwork and curios in Douala’s bustling Akwa shopping district, or seek them out at Douala’s Marché de Fleur. Locals create a hive of activity buying fresh fruit and meat produce amid Cameroonian footballer, Sameul Eto’o shirts at Lagos Market.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Jazzy bars and hot African nights. Douala’s French restaurants double up as jazz lounges with excellent live performances. Later on join expats at the German Seamen’s Mission, where last call is late and plates of sizzling steak and chips are washed down with tall glasses of ‘33’ beer.
